I was first inspired by my friend Ben Nixon, whose part of an absolutely mind blowing psychedelic rock band called Psyence, to begin to book and arrange our own shows at the underground. We'd played there before with our friends from Double Standard who as part of their night put us on the bill with artists like the Dub Smuggles and The Mouse Outfit, which were both hugely successful gigs, for which i am grateful to have played, so naturally they were the first people I wanted to fit the bill.
They kicked the night off with a collection of reggae, roots, jungle and ska played by Andy Shing and Joe Steel through their custom built sound system. The huge bass cabs more than filled the room with wave after wave of warm sub frequencies encouraging the crowd to get moving, providing an excellent start to the night.
Next was our set, we had recently acquired a new member (two weeks before hand), Sir Ashley Wall, a connoisseur of the keys. His slick playing added a new sense of atmosphere to our sound, he is certainly a welcomed addition. Secondly our second vocalist and had gotten his hands on a trumpet, an Ableton Launch Pad and to rather large congas, which all also contributed to widening our frequency spectrum.
We had also written two new tracks. The first one being called Go Funk Yourself - A light hearted piss take in which the lyrics remind the audience to first funk them selves, as its good for their health, then their friends followed by the universe and the galaxy. The highlight of this track for me was its reggae style ending.
The second track was called Got to Go, a dramatic and intense track about leaving. your lover. Containing haunted trumpet and sax harmonies, rhythm heavy verses, intense choruses and a punchy breakdown. Dark sounding but still a highlight of mine.
So tensions were quite high before we went on stage as only having rehearsed these tracks once there was a lot to remember but still the set went smoothly complete with improvised jams, a great crowd response (thanks guys) and a particularly heavy ending thanks to the track Fire and Flames. A chaotic fast paced hard punk track.
Next on the line up were DJ's Joey T and Ocean Spencer, being a regular at Re:Late I have seen these guys play many times and I am still blown away by the seriously groove heavy top and classic deep acid funk house they kick out. They provided a perfect ending to a top night!
A massive well done and thanks to everyone who attended and performed.. Couldn't have gone better! We're planning a second event in which Sea Based Turtle's album will be released. The Date will be announced soon!
